Soccer Tournaments in South America

One of the first things you notice when researching youth soccer tournaments in South America is that there aren't that many of them.

Hmm? Some of the most soccer mad nations on earth, the continent where three countries - Brazil, Argentina and Uraguay - have won the World Cup no fewer than nine times between them, and have developed more world class players than any other part of the world, and the place where such all-time greats as Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo, Messi and Di Stefano learned to play, and they have very few of what a typical US-based team might recognize as youth soccer tournaments.

How curious.

In South America, you see, there is considerably less emphasis on competition and results at the youth level so, while there is certainly lots of soccer to be played, and there are many opportunities for US teams to travel there, you're less likely to find youth teams and coaches getting all worked up because they reached the semi-finals of the Sao Paulo Invitational Futebolfest.

We have listed below some of the few competitive tournaments we found but, if you're really interested in playing in Brazil or Argentina, you're more likely to go there as part of a tour, where you'll play plenty of games against some excellent opposition, but those games will be individual, stand-alone matches.

We have a whole section on Soccer Tours, including tours to Brazil, where we discuss some of the things you should look for, and introduce you to some of the tour operators who can take you there. Click here to visit that part of the site.

Meanwhile, here is our list of soccer tournaments in Brazil.
