Kickers Name New Complex
Ukrop Park Will Host Regional Tournaments
The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club has named their new sports complex Ukrop Park, after the Ukrop family, which donated to the project and has been a strong supporter of soccer for many years.
The 34.5-acre complex will open in June 2009 and will serve as the home of the Kickers' 64 travel teams and 900 recreational players, as well as hosting major regional soccer tournaments.
The current president of the club's board of director is Rob Ukrop, who played in MLS for the New England Revolution, as well as for the Richmond Kickers in the USL.
"We really feel like this is exciting for the region because it's a metropolitan club," Ukrop told the Richmond Times Dispatch. "We like to consider ourselves the first soccer family of Richmond."
The $8.5 million park is located in Chesterfield County, and will feature six lighted fields -- two with artificial Sportexe surface and four with natural grass. Plans call for the location to add a full-scale aquatics center, as well.
The Kickers were formed in May 2000 when Eastern FC and Richmond United youth clubs joined forces with the USL Richmond Kickers. Since then, the club has merged with programs in Midlothian, Ashland and Pocoshock.
