Soccer Tournaments in WashingtonAnyone playing soccer tournaments in Washington needs to be sure to bring their shooting shoes because the evergreen state produces terrific goalkeepers.
On the men’s side Kasey Keller is the best of them all and he grew up in Lacey, Washington before leaving the US to pursue a hugely successful career in the top leagues of Europe. Keller's US National team mate, Marcus Hahnemann also hails from Washington. On the women’s side, US National team goalkeeper Hope Solo was born in Richland and played college ball at the University of Washington, where she was converted from a forward, the position she had played in high school, to the goalkeeper position that would make her famous. So maybe there’s something in the Pacific Northwest water. Seattle, with its multi-cultural population, has been a soccer hotbed for years, and was home to one of the nation’s first successful professional clubs. The Seattle Sounders started life in the old North American Soccer League in the 1970s, actually making it all the way to the Soccer Bowl in 1977 and 1982 before losing both times to the New York Cosmos. The Sounders kept going after the NASL folded as members of the APSL and the USL. A revised version of the team, Seattle Sounders FC, started play in Major League Soccer in 2009. Washington State is the US home of Diadora, so a number of the higher profile soccer tournaments are sponsored by the Italian shoemaker. A number also take place at the 54-acre Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila, just outside Seattle. The aforementioned Sounders have trained at the center, as do a number of the region’s top youth teams. Besides soccer, Washington offers plenty for the visiting soccer family to do, from the obvious trip to Seattle and the Puget Sound, to a stroll along the United States’ longest beach, the Hoh Rainforest, and a desert full of fossils and petrified trees. And don’t forget the Cascade Mountains, which divide the state between east and west, giving each half its own distinct climate. Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in Washington.
