Soccer Tournaments in Utah
Prior to 2001, few soccer fans in the US would have pointed to Utah as one of the nations biggest soccer hotbeds.
Unlike coastal cities like New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Seattle, Utah was not known for the large ethnic populations that many still feel are a prerequisite for a vibrant soccer culture.
What Utah does have, though, is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, whose millions of members often spend time working abroad as missionaries. Many return home with an acquired love of soccer, which may explain why a USL team called the Utah Blitzz was able to make a stir in the minor leagues, attracting 5,000-plus crowds on its way to winning the 2001 and 2004 Division 2 championships.
In 2005, Real Salt Lake became only the states second major league sports franchise, joining MLS and attracting 20,000-plus crowds in spite of the fact that on-field success eluded the team for most of its first several years of existence.
Now, few would argue that Utah is one of the top soccer destinations in the country, and there are several youth soccer tournaments that attract teams from far and wide. As you might expect, most are concentrated during the summer months and, although Utah is best known as a winter tourist destination, there are still plenty of summer activities for the visiting soccer family.
From the wide array of events and festivals that take place in and around Salt Lake City, to the peace and tranquility of no fewer than five national parks the state has within its borders. Utah's rivers offer some of the finest white water rafting in the country, and hiking Notch Peak will take you 4,000 above the surrounding desert, offering spectacular views and quite a feeling of accomplishment.
Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in Utah.
