Soccer Tournaments in MaineSoccer tournaments in Maine fall into a pattern familiar with New England states, whereby the majority of them take place in the spring months, during which the club soccer season runs. However, for younger teams, there are many opportunities to play through Columbus Day and combine a tournament with viewing some spectacular scenery in the New England fall.Though it is tucked away in the most northeastern point of this vast land, soccer is a vibrant sport in the Pine Tree State and several clubs lead the way, including Coastal, whose Father’s Day event is a popular destination for many out of state sides, Black Bear United, which was founded by UMaine coach, Travers Evans, Odyssey and Maine Coast United. Such has been the recent rise of soccer in Maine that the state association has recently been granted the right to stage the US Youth Soccer Region One Championships in both 2007 and 2008. It is estimated that the events will boost the local economy to the tune of $9.4m, as 244 state champions from fifteen regions descend on the Portland area for the end of season tournaments. Portland is Maine’s state capital and offers a bustling social scene at day and night. The Old Port area is popular with young and old, while families will also enjoy the city’s children’s museum. Outside Portland, cities like Freeport and Bangor offer much to pass the time, with activities ranging from hot-air ballooning to deep-sea fishing.
