Denmark was recently ranked by a noted psychologist as the “Happiest Nation on Earth” so a visit to any of the well-established soccer tournaments in Denmark is sure to be a pleasant experience.

What else would one expect from the country that gave us Hans Christian Andersen, Brigitte Nielsen and Lego?

Officially known as the Kingdom of Denmark, the smallest of the Nordic countries borders Germany to the South (its only land neighbor) and is just a short ferry ride or bridge-crossing from Sweden.

In soccer terms, while its national league may not be among Europe’s elite, it does have a tradition of producing excellent players with relatively scarce resources. Michael and Brian Laudrup, Ronnie Eklund and Peter Schmeichel are just a few of the great players to come from Denmark. Meanwhile, club sides like Brondby IF and FC Copenhagen are quite capable of causing an upset or two in the UEFA Champions League, though they are seldom likely to challenge much beyond the group stage.

It is the Danish National team, however, that gave the country its greatest soccer triumph when, in 1992, it was invited to the European Championships as a late replacement for banished Yugoslavia.

For girls’ teams, it is worth noting that Denmark, like its Scandinavian neighbors, has traditionally taken women’s soccer far more seriously than the rest of Europe. It is therefore likely that Danish tournaments will provide a very high level of competition for girls’ teams that may not be easy to find in other European countries.

For visiting soccer families, whether it’s the buzzing city life of Copenhagen or the relaxing countryside of one of Europe’s “greenest” countries, there are plenty of things to do. Tivoli is the country’s most popular tourist attraction, on a top-ten list that also includes Legoland, Bon Bon Land and the Copenhagen Zoo.
