Soccer Tournaments in BelgiumSoccer tournaments in Belgium offer an excellent opportunity for teams not only to play against Belgian clubs but also teams from neighboring France, Germany and Holland.
Even England is just a short ferry ride across the North Sea, with direct convenient sailings into Ostend making it a popular destination for visiting English teams. On the soccer front, the country is best known to US fans perhaps as the place where Oguchi Onyewu got his big professional break, first with La Louvière, and later with Standard Liège. Other top clubs in the Juliper League include Anderlecht and K.V. Mechelen (the only two Belgian clubs ever to win any of the top European tournaments), Club Brugge and RSC Antwerp. The soccer itself can be rugged, and lacks the flair of the Dutch and the French. It’s no coincidence that “Gooch” settled in so well there, when his previous club, Metz of France’s Ligue 1, had discarded him. It is also no coincidence that the most famous and influential player to come out of Belgium in recent years is Marc Bosman, known more for the landmark legal ruling that bears his name than for anything he did on the field.
Antwerp is Belgium's nightlife capital with thousands of bars, cafes, nightclubs and restaurants. It is a particularly good destination for adult teams since the city is full of life, both day and night. Coastal resorts like OstendeS and Blakenberge offer a more family-friendly environment, as does Brussels, where tourist attractions include the Grand Place, one of the most beautiful squares in the world, the Atomium, the Mannekin Pis, and over a hundred museums. Other tourist attractions in the area include the medieval cities of Bruges, Ghent and Ypres, the picturesque town of Sluis, and five theme parks, all within easy reach. Here, then, is our listing of soccer tournaments in Belgium.
