Soccer Tournaments in Austria

The recent history of soccer tournaments in Austria, of course, has been dominated by the 2008 European Championships which the country co-hosted with Switzerland. Austria sits at the geographical heart of Europe and
is, therefore easily accessible for teams from all over Europe.

The country is famous for its spectacular mountains, overlooking crystal-clear lakes and green valleys. The capital, Vienna, has countless historical reminders of Austria’s great past, when the Hapsburgs ruled most of Europe. The ornate Opera House and the former imperial residence of the Hofburg are striking architecture at its best. Austria’s other cities include Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, and Innsbruck, in the centre of the Austrian Alps.

Like the power of the Hapsburgs in Europe, Austria’s soccer prowess is largely a thing of the past. Coaching pioneer Ernst Happel was one of the greatest coaches of all time, winning the league championship with different clubs in four different countries, and taking the Dutch National team to the World Cup final in 1978.

But the Austrian National team has not qualified for the World Cup since 1998, and has only appeared in the Euros once, and that was when it qualified automatically as co-host.

The top professional league comprises just ten teams, including SK Rapid Vienna, SK Sturm Graz and FC Red Bull Salzburg, clubs which might occasionally make a run in the UEFA Cup, but seldom in the Champions League.

Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in Austria.
