Soccer Tournaments in the Czech Republic

Competing in soccer tournaments in the Czech Republic will place you at the crossroads of two distinct soccer cultures, those of Eastern and Western Europe. Bordered by Germany, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Austria, the Czech Republic is located almost in the center of the continent and, therefore, attracts teams that offer a wide diversity of playing styles.

The Czechs themselves, of course, are no slouches when it comes to playing soccer, and have been the most successful of the former eastern bloc nations on the world stage, both before and after the break up of the old Czechoslovakia. They were European Champions in 1976, runners up in 1996, and third-place finishers in 2004, not to mention their second-place finish in the 1962 World Cup.

Domestic club teams, however, have not enjoyed the same level of success as the national team, no doubt because the most talented Czech players are often snapped up by the giant clubs of Western Europe as soon as they show any promise. Peter Cech at Chelsea, Pavel Nedved at Juventus and Tomas Rosicky at Arsenal are just some of the more recent crop of high profile exports.

Czech teams are likely to offer a high degree of technical skill combined with big strong forwards and central defenders. Think of a cross between Croatia and England. It can be a formidable combination.

As a tourist destination, the Czech Republic has really only come into its own since the 1989 Velvet Revolution. Nevertheless, the “Golden City” of Prague is one of the most beautiful in Europe, with its great museums, galleries, concerts and other attractions. It is situated either side of the Vltava River. On one side of the river is the castle district, overlooking the city and linked to the medieval Old Town and Wencelas Square by the famous Charles Bridge. The city is exciting and cosmopolitan with a vibrant nightlife.

The rest of the country is known for its beautiful countryside, well-preserved medieval towns, excellent hiking and some fascinating architecture. The Czechs are an extremely hospitable people, eager to make any visit as enjoyable as possible and, although prices have risen in recent years, compared to other parts of Europe, the Czech Republic still offers something of a bargain for tourists.

Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in the Czech Republic.
