Soccer Tournaments in Switzerland

The best-known soccer tournament in Switzerland in recent years, of course, has been the 2008 European Championships, which the Swiss co-hosted with Austria. Small, mountainous and wealthy, Switzerland is renowned for the high quality of life enjoyed by its population of seven million people.

Bordered by France to the west, Germany to the north, Austria to the east and Italy to the south it is easily accessible by some of the finest youth soccer teams in Europe or at least it would be if it werent totally surrounded by mountains.

Although its known more for its skiing than its soccer, the Swiss national team has put together some quite respectable performances in recent international soccer tournaments. It was the only team to be eliminated from the 2006 World Cup without losing a game, and it qualified for the 1994 event, as well, when it was drawn into the same group as the US.

The oldest and best-known club side is Grasshoppers of Zurich, which has won 18 Swiss National Championships and frequently made runs in European competitions. The best known player of recent years has been Alexander Frei, who plays for Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

As a stylish tourist destination Switzerland offers plenty for visiting soccer families to do. Top ski resorts like Zermatt and celebrity-studded St. Moritz might not be first choice destinations during the summer tournament season, but the white peaks of mountains set against blue skies make a wonderful backdrop for hiking.

The capital city of Bern provides plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and shopping, while nightlife can be a lot of fun, too, since the Swiss like their food and folk music even in discotheques and nightclubs.

Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in Switzerland.
