Soccer Tournaments in Iceland

Soccer tournaments in Iceland offer the traveling team something a little different from the norm. A mountainous and volcanic island close to the artic circle, Iceland is a bustle of activity, particularly in the capital city, Reykjavík.

Reykjavik is one of the cleanest and safest cities in Europe and is in an area of geothermal hot springs, which create a natural central heating system and pollution-free environment. Within a short drive of the city are stunning waterfalls, geysers and geothermal wonders, including the famous Blue Lagoon.

Soccer is very popular and a number of top Icelandic players have found their way onto some of the top professional sides of Europe. Most famous, of course, is Eidur Gudjohnsen, formerly of Chelsea and Barcelona, and captain of the Icelandic National team.

Gudjohnsen’s place in soccer history was set in 1996 when he came on as a substitute for his own father, Arnor, in an international match between Iceland and Estonia.

The Icelandic National team, while by no means one of Europe’s finest, is far from being a whipping boy either. They tied 0-0 with Germany in Euro 2004 qualifying and managed to beat Northern Ireland in the 2008 version of the same.

Here, then, is our list of soccer tournaments in Iceland.
