Soccer Tournaments in GreeceAs the country that invented the concept of organized sporting contests with the Olympics in about 776 BC, Greece can be said to be the ancestral home of all soccer tournaments.
While hardly one of Europe's soccer hotbeds, there is little doubt that the Greeks love soccer with a passion, and the county's club sides have occasionally made waves in top-flight competitions. Panathinaikos made it to the final of the European Cup in 1971, for instance, and and their great city rival AEK Athens reach the semis of the UEFA Cup in 1977. But it's the Greek national team that has given the country its greatest soccer triumph. Having spent most of its history in obscurity, and qualifying only three times for any of the major international tournaments (the World Cup in 1994 and the Euros in 1980 and 2004) Greece shocked the entire soccer world when it was crowned European champions in 2004 in only their second participation in the tournament. Along the way they defeated some of the pre-tournament favorites including defending champions France, the Czech Republic, and hosts Portugal (twice). Current top players include Stelios Giannakopoulos, who made his name with Bolton Wanderers in the EPL and Georgios Samaras of Celtic and formerly of Manchester City. Besides soccer, there is plenty to do for visiting soccer families. With 6,000 Greek islands (okay, only 227 are actually inhabited) and a culture that goes back to the very dawn of civilization, you won't be short of things to do and see. Athens is a vibrant European capital and there ar countless museums, achaeological sites and monuments. Here, then is our list of soccer tournaments in Greece.
