New National Cup Champions
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two New England teams were among the select U.S. clubs to capture a 2007 National Cup VI Championship Tuesday.
Andres Paredes’ hat trick led Connecticut’s Eastern FC Magic to a 3-2 victory over Bethesda SC United in the Premier U13 boys division and Gabrielle Jatkola tallied the game-winner for the MPS Cape Cod Lady Crusaders in a 3-1 victory over the Kickers United FC Cosmos in the Premier U17 girls final.
Those were just two of the title games played Tuesday in flights ranging from U15-U17 for girls and U12-U14 for boys.
In other National Cup actions, the California teams dominated the second weekend of Finals, claiming eight of the 18 national championships awarded. Four of the title games even pitted California sides against each other.
The Irvine Strikers won a pair of all-California tilts. The club won the Super Group U12 Boys title with a 5-1 defeat of Portuguese Athletic Club Tigres and the Super Group U15 Girls championship with a 2-0 blanking of Albion SC.
In other all-California matchups, the San Diego Surf shut out Palo Alto Victory, 3-0, to triumph in the Super Group U13 Girls bracket and USA 17 Academy Metro edged Diablo Valley SC Black Pearl, 1-0, on an overtime strike from Lauren Hom.
NorCal Lamorinda United dropped Minnesota’s Shattuck-St. Mary’s, 3-0 in a penalty kick shootout following a 2-2 tie in the Premier U16 Girls flight. California Odyssey were 3-2 victors over Charlotte SC in the Premier U15 Girls division. Mustang United FC prevailed, 3-1, over Arizona FC Hammers in the Premier U14 Boys bracket and Pateadores took a 4-1 victory over South Charlotte SA to win the Super Group U13 Boys title.
South Charlotte SA, one of two North Carolina clubs to win 2007 National Cup VI championships, fared better in the Premier U12 boys final, blanking the Ottawa Fury, 4-0. SoccerOP used a 4-2 penalty kick shootout victory after a 1-1 tied against Michigan Nationals to claim the Premier U12 Girls championship.
In an evenly matched intra-state battle, New Jersey’s PDA Charge seized the Super Group U13 Final in a 6-5 penalty kick shootout win over Wall Soccer Wild Wombats. New Jersey’s Pasco Stallions edged Santa Clara Sporting FC, 2-1, to hoist the National Cup trophy in the Super Group U14 Boys bracket.
On the strength of overtime goals from Veronica Santiago and Sarah Henderson, New York’s Rochester Jr. Rhinos Elite triumphed in the Super Group U16 Girls Final with a 2-0 victory against Arsenal / World Class Hawks. Maryland’s Freestate Alliance Soccer Shooters recorded a 5-1 victory over Parippany Storm to win the Super Group U17 Girls division.
In the Midwest, the Ohio Premier Girls shut out Brentwood Apex, 3-0, to win the Super Group U12 title while Illinois’ FCX Black earned the Premier U14 championship, 1-0, over Rio Vista FC Riot after Jennifer Freeman netted the overtime game-winner.
