Mass. Tournaments Provide Boost for Area
Two July Events Should Help Lancaster Region
July 13, 2009
One hundred and six teams battled it out in beautiful weather in Massachusetts during this past weekend’s Veterans Cup.
The Adult Soccer Association event is the first of two July tournaments held at Lancaster’s Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park, both of which are expected to generate needed revenue for the local economy. The second event – the US Youth Soccer National Championships – will take place July 21-26.
“These are not only people coming to the tournament, but they’re also tourists,” Lancaster Town Administrator Orlando Pacheco told Wicked Local Lancaster. “They’re going to need places to eat, places to stay. I think the idea is to keep as much of that business and that commerce within the Wachusett Chamber area.”
According to Wicked Local Lancaster, the Wachusett Chamber of Commerce handed out a bag of coupons, brochures and other promotions from local businesses to all attendees.
As for the National Championships in later July, the MYSA last year said it expected participants in the two July tournaments, and their families, to contribute $2.5 million to the local economy, according to Wicked Local Lancaster.
“It looks like this is going to be a continuously large draw for the region,” Pacheco told the publication. “I hope many of the local businesses will do well by it.”
