The Mass Youth Soccer Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park

Owned and operated by the Mass Youth Soccer Association, and nestled along the Mohawk Trail in Lancaster Massachusetts the Citizens Bank Fields at Progin Park has become one of the premier soccer complexes in the country since it opened in 2007.

The 130 acre complex is split into two distinct areas and is soccer specific, with 11 natural grass and 5 synthetic turf fields. Each field meets FIFA international regulation guidelines in size (110 yards x 75 yards).

The grass fields are immaculately maintained, with periodic resting and over seeding to ensure the highest quality playing surface. It is expected that every time a player steps on a field there, they will be playing on the best 'pitch' they have ever encountered.

In addition to these grass fields are five state-of-the-art all-weather Field Turf synthetic turf fields. Although none of the fields currently have lights, plans are being developed to secure approval from the town of Lancaster to add lighting at a future date.

The main part of the complex sits near the intersection of Routes 2 and 70 in the so-called Drumlin Area. This area contains five natural fields and the five synthetic fields, as well as parking and a permanent main pavilion for registration, awards ceremonies, and the like.

Over the river and through the woods is the Quarry Area, which houses six more international sized natural grass fields. And in the small wooded area that separates the two sites is a one mile trail with picnic benches and outdoor grills. These provide places for participating teams and spectators to walk, picnic, and unwind or cool off after a hard fought game.

Hotels in the Area

If it were possible to be in the “middle of nowhere” in a small, densely populated state like Massahcusetts, Lancaster would be there. The good news is that there is plenty of room to build soccer fields in the middle of nowhere. The bad news is, there aren't too many hotels.

Mass Youth Soccer does have an agreement with a host hotel, the Four Points by Sheraton in Leominster, but the shortage of any other accommodations nearby has meant that the organization has stipulated that all out-of-area teams must reserve their hotels through the official tournament housing agency as a requirement for participation in any tournaments held at the fields. That housing Agency is Certified Travel , who can bee reached at (800) 237-1517

Of course, stay-to-play policies are a growing trend in the tournament business, but in this case, there really is a good reason for it besides the obvious financial ones. There simply aren't that many hotels in the area.

Soccer Tournaments Hosted

Each year since it has been opened, the Citizens Bank Fields have hosted Mass Youth Soccer's showcase event, the annual Massachusetts Tournament of Champions held over the last weekend in June. This is the tournament where the top teams from each of the state's ten travel leagues, compete for state-wide bragging rights. There is also the Delta FC Invitational Tournament and College Showcase held over Memorial Day Weekend and the Scoprion Bowl held in March.

In the summer of 2009, Citizens Bank Field hosted the US Youth Soccer National championships as well as the USASA's flagship adult tournament, the Veterans Cup.
