Elite Tournaments was founded in 2000 by Mike Libber, who was fed up with disorganized or poorly run tournaments.
“I’ve been to many soccer tournaments, and some weren’t run well,” Libber told The Herald-Mail.“If you don’t like it, you can either put up or shut up.”
One of Elite’s biggest events in the 500-team Columbia Invitational held every May. The Mason Dixon Cup is a much smaller event, drawing 63 teams this past weekend, but still draws teams from different states all around Maryland.
“The spirit of competition brings all these different teams out,” Libber told The Herald-Mail. “Everybody wants to compete.”
According to the Herald-Mail, Libber has involved his family in Elite Tournaments. His wife, Amanda, is the director of marketing and publications, and his brother, Matthew, is director of operations.
Libber said the key to a successful event is communication.
“Over the years, I’ve built relationships with coaches,” said Libber in The Herald-Mail article. “You need to be organized and communicate with the teams as much as possible.”
